St. John’s News and Notes for July 2, 2023
ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE EPISCOPAL CHURCH Dear Friends: This Fourth of July, I bless all those veterans, living or dead, who have defended our democracy. We have many in our congregation who deserve our never-ending gratitude. It is a debt we will never be able to repay. My father was a veteran of WWII. He participated in the invasions of Normandy, Sicily, Tinian, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He also was part of a little-known debacle known as The Battle of Slapton Sands, a practice run for the invasion of France that went horribly wrong. He persevered and he endured. He carried a little Bible that his mother had given him, and many nights he would go up on the deck of his ship, The Bayfield, to read and think and pray. It is said that there are no atheists in the trenches, I know that the ugliness and brutality of war gave him plenty to ponder. Would there be a happy ending? Where was God in all this? In an ironic twist, Dad found a German belt buckle on Utah Beach that read, “God Mit Uns” – God With Us. In times of trial, we might well wonder whose side God is on. Life is filled with hardships, but we can rest in the knowledge that God in Christ is always working behind the scenes to redeem and reconcile. When we feel that God is testing us, we must have faith in Christ’s victory — which is victory for all of us. Come on Sunday to find out more about Abraham, Isaac, and why Christ’s work in us is never finished – and why this gives us true spiritual freedom! May God bless the United States of America.
