St. John’s News and Notes for AUGUST 13, 2023

ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Dear Friends:
Last Sunday was the Sunday of the Transfiguration, commemorating Jesus’ transfiguration on the mountain with Peter, James and John. Jesus shows his true nature – his divine nature – one that transcends time and space.
This Sunday we will examine the story of Jesus walking on water – another supra-natural occurrence designed to show us the importance of faith and the ever-present love of God.
Most of us are familiar with the story of how Jesus walks on water in the midst of a storm and how he encourages Peter to come out of his boat and walk to him. But Peter is frightened of the wind and waves, and he begins to sink. As he begs Jesus to save him, Jesus is right there, helping him get up and get back into the boat. Jesus calms the storm, and the disciples recognize him as the Son of God.
Please join me on Sunday as we journey through the deeper meanings of this wonderful story. We’ll delve into the original Greek and explore the deep symbolism woven into the text about how easy it is to lose sight of God in the midst of life’s storms. Remember, the chaos always stops when we recognize God’s presence with us. The Apostle Paul tells us that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:5-15). Our job is to get out of the boat and trust that God will carry us through.
Come Sunday to find out more!

In Christ,
The Rev. Dr. Marci Pounders+Rector
